Spring is officially here! It is now time to service your HVAC system before the hot weather envelopes the entire area for the summer. It’s time to have a spring tune-up performed on your system before you really need it, when it’s 90 degrees in the shade during the dog days of summer. Spring into cool this summer with these routine tips and recommendations.
Change the Filter
The number-one killer of air conditioners is dirt and dust getting on the condensing coils. It can shorten the lifespan of an air conditioner by up to half its normal life expectancy.
Clean the Drain
Clean the drain once a month. Add a 1 cup, 50/50 ratio, of bleach and water to the air conditioner drain once a month. Adding this mixture to the drain can help prevent build-up of algae or blockage.
Walk around the house looking for any cracks or openings around windows and door jams.
If you find any, seal them up with expanding foam. Or if the caulking around your windows is dried out and cracking, replace it with fresh caulk. Up to 30% of energy loss in homes is through windows and doors.
Clean the outside of the Air Conditioner
Grass, dirt, debris and other physical particles can build up on the outside of your air conditioner over time. A simple rinse and clean of the outside of your unit can improve airflow into the system so that it does not have to work as hard.
Check your thermostat to make sure it’s working properly and keeps your home at the right temperature. If you have an older, mechanical type thermostat, you may want to consider upgrading to a programmable model.
